Another vacation beckons! Have stayed at home this Christmas for a change, we are off for two weeks in the sun. This time it is somewhere quite new to us - Costa Rica. The weather looks quite warm and the opportunity to see some new birds and animals looks promising. I still haven't made up my mind which camera to bring but I hope I get to take lots of nice photos to share. See you all in February ! Take care.

As I mentioned previously, I got a new Olympus E-M5 some time ago but haven't really had time to use it until a few days ago. So off I went to our local zoo. I have to say the animals were wonderful but my photos weren't. So what do you do when that happens? - sell the camera? -give up and never take another photo? Of course not ! Step 1 is to try to find out what you did wrong. This was easy, I was simply lazy and didn't adjust the controls enogh, leaving most things to the camera. Every photo was on the same aperture with a shallow depth of field (f5.6) which is fine for portraits but not for other subjects. I also didn't adjust the point of focus manually, leaving the decision to the camera, which is often incorrect. (some samples of some of the better photos are included below) So it is back to basics.... learn the camera controls so that everything becomes instinctive, even though some of the controls are small and fiddly for my big fingers. This takes time but it is time well invested. So in a couple of weeks we are off to Costa Rica and what camera will I bring? My Nikon of course, as I cannot afford to miss a shot because I don't know the controls well enough. |
