KENYA SAFARI 2013
In 2013 we went on our first safari to Kenya - a wonderful experience. The following photos are taken from videos and so are not up to photographic quality, but are ok. The video camera was in its early days as a digital version and the autofocus was appalling, only 20% of my video was actually in focus! I hope you enjoy them, there is plenty of variety!
SAMBURU GAME RESERVE
Samburu Is a semi-desert area North-East of Nairobi. We saw loads of different species there including a leopard.
MOUNT KENYA & EQUATOR
We had a couple of days at Mount Kenya Hotel (once a private mansion of William Holden) for rest. An afternoon was spent on Horseback looking at Albino Zebras, but it is nearly impossible to ride a horse and vide at the same time!
LAKE NAVASHA & LAKE NAKURU
Our hotel was at Lake Natasha but our trip was to Lake Nakuru where we saw a herd of Rhinos sleeping together. There had been recent heavy rains and the lake was flooded so the thousands of famous Flamingos were absent and only a handful remained.
MASAI MARA
The Masai Mara is the top destination in Kenya. It straddles the border with Tanzania and is the site of the great annual wildebeest migration. These photos aren't great but they will pass as acceptable. Enjoy!
MASAI MARA BALLOON TRIP
While we were visiting, we took the once in a lifetime opportunity to go up in a hot air balloon. We were the only passengers, so the hotel staff made up the ballast! Wildlife was scarce and it was very difficult to get video in the very low light. So enjoy the results for what they are - it was a bit of a miracle that I managed to photograph anything!
GREAT RIFT VALLEY & KAREN BLIXEN HOUSE
The Great Rift Valley is a volcanic fault line that runs across North-East Africa. Eventually it will widen so much that the sea will rush in and form a huge island. Karen Blixen was made famous when they made a movie from her book Out Of Africa with Meryl Streep playing Karen.
AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
Our final stop was Amboseli National Park in the shadow of Kilimanjaro just across the border in Tanzania. Plenty of Elephants here and also some hippos but the poor evening light made video difficult. Hope you enjoy anyway.
