PLYMOUTH - OCEAN CITY
Plymouth is a historic city formed from three old towns Stonehouse, Devonport and Plymouth. The city faces the English Channel at the mouths of the rivers Plym and the larger Tamar. As the city I now live in, I would like to share with you some photos of the city, historic Barbican area and the famous Hoe (High Place) overlooking the waterfront of Plymouth Sound. I also include some more unusual photos taken around the city.
THE BARBICAN
Meaning "fortified gate", the Barbican is the best preserved area of old Plymouth. This is the harbour area where fresh fish are still landed by small trawlers. Fish used to shipped to London daily by railway from Plymouth. Nowadays you are just as likely to see luxury motor cruisers (made in Plymouth) and yachts moored up as fishing boats.
THE HOE
Meaning "high place", Plymouth Hoe is famous as the sire where Sir Francis Drake played bowls while waiting for the tide to turn before fighting the Spanish Armada. Today it still retails a bowling green and a large fort called "The Citadel" but it is mainly an open area with a pleasant walk along the seafront. The forner Eddystone Lighthouse was demolished and reconstructed on the Hoe and is a prominent landmark.
Tinside Pool is a large open air swimming pool on the Hoe.
