A TRIP TO NORTH WALES
A few weeks ago we took a trip up to North Wales with a base in Bala. Luckily we had superb weather except for the day we went to PortMerion. Enjoy the photos!

BANGOR STATION
I took these photos for railway fans. Bangor is an unusual station, set between two tunnels and with a peculiar footbridge. The photos won't be of much interest to most people.

LLANBERIS & SNOWDON MOUNTAIN RAILWAY
Llanberis is a very popular spot and the most popular attraction is the Snowdon Mountain Railway which is a rack railway - the track has a steel serrated plate between the rails and a cogwheel on the locomotive helps propel the train up the steep gradients.

WELSH MOUNTAIN ZOO
The Welsh Mountain Zoo is a small zoo in the town of Colwyn Bay. While the staff are friendly, the place is outdated and the enclosures are cramped. The animals look well cared for, but I can't say that I enjoyed my time there.
ABERSOCH - LLEYN PENINSULA
Abersoch is a delightful little holiday village on the Lleyn Peninsula. Boats are towed out to sea via tractor to launch them.
GLASLYN OSPREY CENTRE near Porthmadog.
PORTMERION
Portmerion was created by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1976. He wanted to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. Today Portmeirion is one of Wales' premier visitor attractions, welcoming over 200,000 visitors every year. Based on an idealized Italian village, it was created by buying up architectural details from around Britain at a time when many stately homes were is decline or disrepair. The village was used as a set for the TV series "The Prisoner" shown in 1967. Unfortunately, we picked a rainy, miserable day to go there!

LLANGOLLEN CANAL VIADUCT AT PONTCYSYLLTE
The viaduct was an engineering masterpiece from the civil engineer Thomas Telford to get the Llangollen Canal across the Dee valley at Pontcysyllte. It took ten years to build and was opened in 1805.
