TAVISTOCK
Tavistock is a small market town about 20 miles north of Plymouth. It has a ruined abbey and it sits at the southern gateway to Dartmoor. This, together with it's market and small artisan shops make it popular with visitors. The covered market sells a variety of articles and there are also small shops and cafes around the outside.
ADVERTISING BICYCLE
The first thing that caught my eye was this advertising bicycle on the way to the market. Unfortunately I could do nothing about the position of the waste bin which was fixed together with the bicycle. It could be Photoshopped out, if I could spare the time.

TROLLEY
This goods trolley was standing underneath a metal staircase. The handles have been used so much the paint has worn away to the bare metal.

TROLLEY
Another goods trolley given a black and white treatment to reduce the distracting yellow lines and chair in the background. This shot illustrates some of the things you should look out for that can distract from your image. Again, both could be Photoshopped out if I wanted to take the time.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU ?
Two men look at a cafe menu perhaps with a view to buying a coffee and some cake.

BASKETS & BAGS
A display of wicker baskets and shopping bags at an outside stall. Perhaps the colourful bags are distracting and a closer crop of the baskets alone would be better.

LEADING LINES
An example of the use of leading lines. The yellow road lines and the receding pillars and roof line draw the eye to the antique shop at the top of the photo. The postcard rack on the left compensates for the empty space on the right.

TIN PAN ALLEY
Tin Pan Alley is a nickname given to the music publishing area of Denmark Street in London which used to be a metalworking area. I think the title is apt given the large metal pot the man is carrying. A black and white treatment gives the photo an older look with more atmosphere than the colour version.

BRIC-A-BRAC SHOP
I don't think the suit of armour is historic but it attracts shoppers.

BARBER'S SIGN
The classic red and white barbers sign seems to be disappearing from our high streets. The symbol dates back to the Middle Ages when barbers were surgeons and did blood-letting, advertising their trade by wrapping bloody bandages around a pole.

LOCALLY MADE
A stall of locally made gifts in the market. Honiton in Devon was once famous for lace-making but that has all but disappeared commercially. Still, it is good that some local workmanship can still survive in this modern industrial society.

COLOURFUL WOOL
Knitting seems to be quite popular in Tavistock despite the cheapness of ready made garments.

HAT TRICK
Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap. Well that is how Tesco started off. Plenty of variety of summer hats on display here.

I hope that you have enjoyed this little trip to Tavistock and seen that you can still take decent images with a compact camera by looking at detail.
Image quality isn't as good as a DSLR but this camera cost £20 used rather than £600 for a new D7100.
All images taken using a Nikon Coolpix S210 compact camera and adjusted in Photoshop elements for crop, contrast and saturation only.
