Unfortunately when touring on a package tour, we often find ourselves on an organised guided tour. There is probably nothing worse when trying to take photos! One tip I have learned over the years is to position myself either at the very front of the group or the very back. If you are at the front, you often have the opportunity to take a couple of photos before the place is swarming with tourists. Likewise, if you hang back from the group they will move on allowing you to photograph before the next group arrives.

As a (almost professional) tourist, I take lots of photos of places that are new to me. As a stranger in a strange land, I have the luxury of looking at things with a fresh eye. So what do I do? The first think is to look around to see what attracts me about a particular place. Any number of things might make a first impression on my eye including shapes (of buildings or landscapes), lines (roads or paths or walls), colours (items or clothes or scenery), patterns (objects or landscapes) and texture (objects, buildings, trees). Having decided on what makes a scene attractive, I then decide on what element of that I want to focus on. For example, in Amsterdam bicycles are a major feature of life, so I might want to take a photo of a bicycle or bicycles. But a photo of a bicycle would be a bit boring, so I look for some feature of a particular bicycle like it's location or a part of a bicycle that is interesting. I have included three examples - the first is an unusual bicycle, the second is an unusual feature and the third is a bicycle traffic sign. I hope this helps you take more unusual and interesting photos. Happy clicking !
Hi friends ! Apologies for not keeping my site up to date but other things have got in the way. Anway, I'm off on another short trip this week to Bruges and Amsterdam, so it will be just over a week before I have time to post some more photos, but I promise I will ! In the meantime keep looking through the photos as there are plenty to view !
best wishes Ray After visiting Antarctica, what could possibly be next? Well, I have a couple of trips planned this year. First in April will be a trip to Amsterdam and Bruges. Then in May is a cruise around the Norwegian fjords. Also in May is a special trip that my daughter bought for me to travel and have a meal on the world famous Flying Scotsman steam train. So there are still many reasons to travel and enjoy what I do, including a trip to Japan in April 2018.
In the meantime I will keep posting some less dramatic photos in the hope that you will still enjoy them. Keep logging in ! Having been on several day excursions while I was away on holiday, I got to thinking about providing some tips for photography when on a guided tour. So I have added some to the Tourism tips. Enjoy !
Well I finally made it back from South America and had a fantastic time. It was a privilege to visit and photograph just a tiny fraction of Antarctica and a great thrill to stand on the edge of the dramatic Iguazu Falls. Anyway, over the next few weeks I will put up some photos of my travels as a series short slideshows that will provide a better viewing experience than wading through lots of pics. I hope you enjoy looking as much as I enjoyed taking them. Don't forget to leave any comments in the YOUR VIEWS section.
Regards Ray Wilson Hi folks and season's greetings. Unfortunately this is my last post for about a month as I will be away on the other side of the globe for a month, cruising around South America and down to Antarctica. In the meantime, here is a seasonal photo to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
Hi folks! Just back from a lovely week in the Dordogne region of France. Still processing the photos taken on my little Olympus camera. In the meantime I have posted a couple of photos on the LANDSCAPES page and one on the OTHER/FUN page. Enjoy!
