Go outside and find yourself a well lit isolated subject (like a tree or building or statue). Simply look at the object and see how it is lit. Now slowly walk around it, stopping every couple of paces to see how the light has changed on the subject and shadow detail has changed. When you have circled the subject you will have better understood light and lighting.
Next find a colourful object and repeat the exercise but this time looking at how a colour (or colours) change according to the changes in light. The saturation of light will change according to the intensity of light and shadow.
Now you are beginning to understand light....
Remember, there is no such thing as bad light in photography. You just need to understand light in order to make the best of the light available to you.
